1844-1889 Jules Tavernier was born in Paris in 1844. He studied with the French painter, F??lix Joseph Barrias (1822-1907), but left France in the 1870s, never to return. Tavernier was employed as an illustrator by Harper's Magazine, which sent him on assignment to California in the 1870s. Eventually he continued westward to Hawaii, where he made a name for himself as a landscape and portrait painter. He was captivated by Hawaii??s erupting volcanoes??a subject that was to pre-occupy him for the rest of his life, which was spent in Hawaii, Canada and the western United States. He is considered the most important artist of Hawaii??s Volcano School. Tavernier died in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1889. His students included David Howard Hitchcock (1861-1943), Am??d??e Joullin (1862-1917), Charles Rollo Peters (1862-1917) and Manuel Valencia (1856-1935). Gustave Boulanger
(1824-88) was a French figure painter known for his Neo-Grec style. He was born at Paris, studied with Delaroche and Jollivet, and in 1849 took the Prix de Rome. His paintings are prime examples of academic art of the time, particularly history painting. Boulanger had visited Italy, Greece, and North Africa, and his paintings reflect his attention to culturally correct details and skill in rendering the female form. His works include a Moorish Cafe (1848), Cæsar at the Rubicon (1865), the Promenade in the Street of Tombs, Pompeii (1869), and The Slave Market (1888). The recipient of many medals, he became a member of the Institut de France in 1882.
holger drachmann
född 9 oktober 1846 i Köpenhamn, död 14 januari 1908 i Hornbæk, var en dansk författare. Drachmann försökte sig först på måleri, men gav upp och ägnade sig i stället åt författande. Han skrev noveller, dikter, romaner och skådespel. Edvard Grieg satte musik till många av Drachmanns dikter, bland annat Reiseminder fra Fjeld og Fjord, opus 44. En av hans mest berömda dikter är Et andnat Skagen.
